On September 11, 2018 we were taken on an adventure with Roger and his wife Ginger as they shared their experiences of mining gems near and far. The wine was wonderful, and the food was delicious ðŸ·.
Roger & Ginger brought in over 300 gemstones to us to enjoy, from many countries in a variety of styles and colors.
Roger is a world-renowned gemstone faceter. Roger Dery began his consciously sourced gem design business 36 years ago and, since then, has won two American Gem Trade Association Cutting Edge Awards, an honor equivalent to an Oscar in the world of gems. He is also the subject of "Sharing the Rough," an award-winnnig documentary on sourcing gemstones and the journey of a gem from mine to market.
Roger is in demand. Sought after for holistic sourcing, Roger only buys from local professionals, a practice which benefits local families and the regional economy in the long term. He imports his rough gems legally and transparently into the U.S., where he facets all the gemstones himself, an uncommon practice in the gem industry. After Roger purchases the gem, it never leaves his hands until it is delivered to its final owner.
Roger pays it forward. Roger is dedicated to education and progress for those who live in the mineral-producing areas he purchases from. In 1999, Roger consulted on the development of a gemstone cutting school in Namibia. He regularly contributes to the Arusha Gemmological & Jewelry Training Centre in Tanzania, the Voi, Kenya faceting school, the Kitarini Maasai Children’s School, and a myriad of other organizations in East Africa.
